Several Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers were killed in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack in central Somalia.
According to reports from the region, six SNA soldiers were killed in the Wednesday attack.
Security agents in Middle Shabelle confirmed that a landmine exploded near Bal’ad town at a scene of heavy fighting between SNA and Al-Shabaab militants.
SNA and the extremists have been involved in intense gunfight over the last one week.
Reports indicate that this week’s landmine explosion took place a few days after the government deployed its troops in the region to contain the militia.
During the incident, three soldiers suffered life-threatening injuries for which they were rushed to hospital for medical attention.
Security officials stated that the soldiers were on their way from Basra to Bal’ad town to pursue fleeing members of the militia group when they were attacked.
