Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) has expressed displeasure at reports indicating that the government plans to suspend funding to Hargeisa University’s Faculty of Journalism.
SOLJA established the Faculty of Journalism at the university together with the UK Embassy in Somalia.
Since then, the faculty has been offering degree and diploma courses over the last four years.
The faculty has operated with funds from the government. However, recent reports that the government plans to stop the funding worries SOLJA.
Further reports that parliament has approved government’s proposal to cut funding has exacerbated the situation.
SOLJA believes that Hargeisa University would have no option other than to close the faculty if funding becomes a problem.
Consequently, the organization has sent a plea to President Muse Bihi Abdi, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Information to reconsider the decision.
