Somali Ambassador Elected the New UN General Assembly Vice President

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has announced the election of Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman Baale from Somalia as its new Vice President.

Ambassador Baale was elected into the prestigious position on Monday.

Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, the President of the ongoing 74th Session of UNGA, announced this delightful news in a letter addressed to all members.

On his part, Ambassador Baale congratulated the people and government of Somalia for his election on Twitter.

In his tweet, Baale also appreciated the role played by the people and government of Turkey in enabling his country to win this election.

By virtue of his election, Ambassador Baale joins the list of the 21 Vice Presidents who will guide UNGA’s 75th Session.

Somalia has served UNGA in a similar capacity in the past. Dr. Hassan N. Elmi was elected the Vice President of UNGA between 1963 and 1964.

He was followed by Abdirizak H. Hussein and H.E. Ahmed M. Aden alias Qaybe who occupied the same position between 1979 and 1980.

Abdullahi S. Osman was the last Somali to be elected the Vice President of UNGA, a position that he held from 1986 to 1987.
