Somali Ambassador to Nigeria Presents Credentials to Boost Bilateral Ties

ABUJA — Somalia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Osman Mohamed, has officially presented his Letters of Credence to the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marking a strategic diplomatic move to expand bilateral relations between the two nations.

The formal accreditation ceremony was conducted with full diplomatic honors, reflecting the growing alliance between Mogadishu and Abuja, according to officials familiar with the proceedings.

Deepening Bilateral Cooperation

During the diplomatic exchange, both delegations engaged in dialogue focused on accelerating bilateral coordination across strategic sectors, including political, economic, and security cooperation. The engagement is designed to maximize mutual interests and capabilities on the international stage.

The Somali Embassy used the diplomatic opportunity to reaffirm the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with Nigeria.

Previous High-Level Engagements

The ambassador’s accreditation follows a series of high-level diplomatic engagements between Somalia and Nigeria. In July 2025, Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, held a pivotal meeting with Nigerian Foreign Minister Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar on the sidelines of the African Union Executive Council in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

During that meeting, the two ministers agreed to enhance cooperation in politics, diplomacy, and economic development, emphasizing the need for deeper strategic engagement. Discussions covered mutual priorities such as trade facilitation, investment opportunities, and capacity-building exchanges.

A key highlight of the Malabo meeting was the reaffirmation of their shared commitment to regional peace and stability. Both ministers underscored the importance of coordinated efforts in combating terrorism and violent extremism, which pose ongoing threats to the Horn of Africa and West African regions alike.

Nigeria’s Firm Support for Somalia’s Sovereignty

Nigeria has consistently demonstrated its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity on the continental stage. In December 2025, the Federal Republic of Nigeria issued a forceful declaration reaffirming its “unwavering commitment” to the sovereignty, territorial unity, and statehood of Somalia.

The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared its unequivocal support for the Federal Government in Mogadishu as the sole legitimate authority representing the Somali people, grounding its stance in the Charter of the United Nations and the Constitutive Act of the African Union.

“Nigeria declares its firm and unequivocal support for the sovereignty, unity, and statehood of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” the Ministry stated at the time.

Nigeria also issued a stern warning to the international community regarding recent diplomatic maneuvers in the Horn of Africa, urging all international actors to “desist from recognizing any part of the territory of Somalia as an independent entity.”

Strategic Importance of the Partnership

The Nigerian government has noted that the stability of Somalia is “integral to the peace and security of the entire Horn of Africa region and the African continent at large,” pledging to continue supporting Somalia through multilateral frameworks and international cooperation.

By expanding its diplomatic presence in West Africa through Ambassador Mohamed’s accreditation, Somalia is securing beneficial alliances that promote national economic development and strengthen its position across the African continent.

The Federal Government has made clear its intention to continue deepening ties with Abuja, viewing Nigeria as a key partner in advancing Somalia’s foreign policy objectives and continental integration efforts.
