Somali and Ethiopian Spy Chiefs Meet

Somalia and Ethiopia have recently experienced heightened tensions following a reported attack by Ethiopian forces on Somali security positions in Dolow, Gedo region.

The Somali government condemned this incursion as a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, citing casualties among its National Army, Intelligence Agency, and Police Force.

In response to these events, the intelligence chiefs of both nations convened in Addis Ababa to address mutual challenges and explore opportunities for collaboration.

This meeting occurred shortly after the Somali government’s condemnation of the attack, indicating a commitment to diplomatic engagement despite recent hostilities.

The backdrop to these developments includes the Ankara Declaration, a Turkish-mediated agreement signed on December 11, 2024, aimed at reducing tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia.

The declaration focused on securing Ethiopian commercial access to the Red Sea and emphasized respect for each nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Despite this agreement, incidents like the Dolow attack highlight ongoing challenges in Ethiopia-Somalia relations.

The recent meeting between their intelligence chiefs suggests a willingness to address these issues through dialogue, seeking a path forward that acknowledges both nations’ concerns and aspirations.
