Somali Army Warns Against Illegal Use of Uniforms and Vehicles

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somalia National Army (SNA) has issued a stern warning against the unauthorized use, modification, or trade of its official uniforms, insignia, and military vehicles, vowing to prosecute offenders under military and civilian law.

In a statement released on Friday, the SNA Command said it had observed growing misuse of its military attire and assets by individuals and businesses, including cases where civilians were seen wearing army-style clothing or operating vehicles marked with SNA symbols.

“Individuals or businesses caught using, modifying, or trading SNA property without approval will face strict legal consequences,” the statement warned.

The army also issued a specific directive to garage owners and mechanics across the country, barring them from repairing, storing, or repainting military vehicles unless formally authorized by the Ministry of Defense. Authorities said any workshop found servicing such equipment without clearance will be shut down and its owners prosecuted.

The SNA emphasized that the illegal use of military gear not only undermines national security but also creates opportunities for criminal networks and insurgent groups to disguise themselves as government forces.

The warning comes amid ongoing national security operations against Al-Shabaab militants, who have previously exploited stolen or counterfeit military equipment to conduct attacks and evade detection.

Security experts say the enforcement of this directive will be crucial in restoring discipline and public confidence in the armed forces.

The army urged citizens to report anyone in possession of unauthorized military equipment, stating that cooperation between the public and security agencies is essential to stabilizing the country.
