Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Somalia have been asked to be more vigilant after Internet services were restored across the country yesterday.
The country was forced to endure Internet shutdown that has been in place since Saturday.
Initially, Hormuud Telecom, the biggest ISP in Somalia, blamed the interruption on adverse weather conditions along the Indian Ocean where underground sea cables are laid.
However, NetBlocks.org, an Internet freedom watchdog, said the government had deliberately shut the services down.
Latest reports now indicate that Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) switched the services back on remotely.
A report from Dalkom Somalia to Somalia’s Ministry of Post, Telecom and Technology showed that EASSy’s input enabled the restoration of the services all over the country.
Abdi Ashur Hassan, the Minister of Post, Telecom and Technology, asked the telecom firms to exercise more vigilance until the situation improves.
He asked the providers to play their role well since the country’s economy is now more Internet-based, which make similar disruptions quite costly.
