Rebuilt Somali Bridge Enhances Security and Trade After Al-Shabaab Assault

Mogadishu, Somalia – A vital bridge that links essential supply corridors in Somalia has been reconstructed following its destruction by Al-Shabaab extremists, which had paralyzed the flow of commodities and services across the conflict-affected Horn of African country.

Although militants demolished the structure in June, the Turkish government committed to its reconstruction to accelerate the transport of supplies, personnel, and frontline troops, thereby alleviating strain on Somalia’s embattled federal administration.

The bridge, situated close to Sabid and Anole communities, represents one of five crucial crossings over the Shabelle river that government troops, backed by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), have fiercely fought to secure and retain control of.

The structure stands near Afgoye town, approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu.

Numerous high-ranking government officials attended the inauguration ceremony, pledging to eradicate remaining al-Shabaab elements.

According to state media reports, Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi and Interior Minister Ali Yusuf Ali presided over the official opening ceremony of the restored Sabiid and Anole bridge.

The reconstruction of this vital infrastructure, which was sabotaged by terrorists earlier in the year, symbolizes a significant advancement in the Federal Government’s dedication to improving security, stimulating economic activity, and reinstating unrestricted movement for local populations.

In June, AUSSOM forces alongside the Somali National Army (SNA) reclaimed control of Anole and Sabid villages along with the strategically important bridge following fierce combat.

Authorities confirmed that al-Shabaab militants destroyed various infrastructure, notably the bridge and a communication tower, while withdrawing.

Military operations at that time were targeting the additional bridges at Awdhegle and Barire.

Al-Shabaab combatants have continued to instigate disorder and unrest throughout the nation while attempting to destabilize the vulnerable UN-supported federal government of Somalia.
