Somali Cabinet Appointment of National Higher Education Committee

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia on Thursday approved the appointment of members to the National Higher Education Committee, marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s higher education system.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. The newly appointed 15-member committee will be tasked with advising on national policies, governance, and quality assurance mechanisms in the higher education sector.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the committee’s formation is part of broader government reforms focused on improving educational standards, institutional coordination, and academic accreditation in Somali universities.

“This committee will help ensure our higher education sector meets international standards and serves the needs of our youth,” said PM Barre, who emphasized the importance of education in national development and post-conflict reconstruction.

In addition to the committee’s appointment, the Council reviewed ongoing government reform programs aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and public service delivery across various sectors.

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education welcomed the move, noting it would contribute to the modernization of curricula, faculty development, and harmonization of qualifications across public and private institutions.

Somalia’s higher education sector has grown rapidly in recent years, but challenges remain regarding regulatory oversight, standardization, and access. The formation of the National Higher Education Committee is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing these issues and guiding long-term policy direction.
