Mogadishu, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia has taken decisive steps to strengthen public financial management, national security, and international diplomacy following Thursday’s Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
During the session, ministers unanimously approved the appointment of Mohamed Mahmoud Abdulle as the new Accountant General, entrusting him with the critical responsibility of overseeing state accounts and ensuring transparency in government financial operations. His appointment comes amid ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing Somalia’s public finance systems and enhancing revenue accountability.
In a major security development, the Cabinet adopted the National Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Prevention Strategy — a comprehensive framework designed to counter one of the deadliest threats posed by militant groups. The strategy focuses on intelligence coordination, law enforcement training, community awareness, and advanced detection technologies to reduce IED-related attacks across the country.
On the diplomatic front, Somalia endorsed a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations with Tajikistan, signaling a new phase of bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The agreement is expected to enhance collaboration in areas such as governance, economic development, and counterterrorism.
Prime Minister Barre praised the Cabinet’s decisions as “integral to advancing stability, fiscal integrity, and regional partnerships,” reaffirming his administration’s commitment to institutional strengthening and international engagement.
