Somali Cabinet Bans Buying and Selling of Arms by Non-State Actors

Somalia’s Council of Ministers announced a ban on the arms trade by non-state actors.

Consequently, non-state actors would not be allowed to buy or sell arms and weapons anywhere in the country.

Cabinet ministers held an extraordinary meeting on Friday evening under the leadership of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

This decision is part of efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons, which pose a significant threat to the country’s stability and security.

The ban is expected to help reduce violence and enhance the overall security situation in Somalia by limiting the availability of arms to unauthorized individuals and groups.

This week, the proliferation of arms and weapons in Somalia caused plenty of shock in the country.

Various leaders blamed the rise in violent clashes around the country on the decision by the United Nations to lift the arms embargo against Somalia that had lasted over three decades.
