Somali Civil Society Calls for Peaceful Election Talks

Mogadishu, Somalia – Prominent Somali civil society organizations have urged both government and opposition leaders to resolve ongoing election disputes through peaceful dialogue and negotiation.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, the groups expressed deep concern over rising political tensions, warning that continued division could threaten national stability.

They called on all parties to prioritize the country’s interests and uphold democratic principles.

“We strongly urge leaders to choose dialogue over confrontation. Somalia cannot afford another cycle of political unrest,” the statement read.

The call comes amid growing disputes over electoral procedures and timelines, particularly in regional states. Observers warn that unresolved disagreements could delay upcoming elections and fuel insecurity.

Civil society actors, including women’s groups, youth organizations, and religious leaders, offered to help mediate talks and emphasized the need for an inclusive, Somali-led process.

The appeal reflects mounting public pressure for a peaceful solution as the country navigates a critical period in its democratic transition.
