Somali Defense Leaders Brief Upper House on Security Gains and Military Reforms

Mogadishu, Somalia — The Minister of Defense, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, and Chief of the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF), General Odowa Yusuf Rage, appeared before the Upper House of Parliament today to present an extensive update on the state of national security, ongoing counterterrorism operations, and the government’s efforts to strengthen the SNAF.

In a detailed briefing, Fiqi outlined the tangible progress made by Somali troops over the past year, crediting their courage and discipline for significant territorial gains against extremist groups. He emphasized that Somali soldiers have fought under difficult conditions, yet remained steadfast in their duty to protect the nation and its people. The minister reported that in the last twelve months, Somali forces, supported by coordinated operations, have successfully dismantled militant networks and reclaimed strategic areas once held by insurgents.

According to the Defense Ministry’s data, 220 precision airstrikes have been carried out since February, eliminating 868 militants, including 52 senior operatives from both Al-Shabaab and Daesh factions. These strikes, Fiqi noted, have disrupted enemy command structures and weakened their capacity to carry out large-scale attacks.

Gen. Odowa, in his presentation, focused on the structural and institutional reforms underway within the Somali National Army. He explained that the reorganization process—long delayed due to years of conflict and logistical challenges—has resumed with renewed vigor. The restructuring aims to foster a professional, disciplined, and unified military force capable of defending the country without heavy external reliance.

The Defense Chief also discussed the ongoing efforts to train new recruits, improve command efficiency, and enhance inter-agency coordination. He stressed that the ultimate goal is to build a self-sufficient national army that can sustain peace and stability across all regions of Somalia.

The parliamentary session reflected a growing sense of optimism about Somalia’s security trajectory. Despite persistent threats from extremist groups, government officials and lawmakers expressed confidence that the combined reforms, enhanced operations, and renewed leadership at the Ministry of Defense and within the SNA are paving the way for a more secure and sovereign Somalia.
