Somalia’s Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur is currently in Cairo for discussions with his Egyptian counterpart, Lieutenant General Abdul Majeed Saqr.
The primary agenda includes Egypt’s potential participation in the newly approved African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
This mission, set to replace the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), aims to support Somalia’s ongoing efforts against terrorism and stabilize the country.
In October 2023, a tripartite summit involving Somalia, Egypt, and Eritrea in Asmara praised Egypt’s willingness to contribute troops to peacekeeping missions in Somalia.
A separate bilateral declaration between Egypt and Somalia further emphasized the importance of Egypt’s support for AUSSOM.
This development reflects deepening regional cooperation and Egypt’s commitment to Somalia’s stability and unity amidst a critical transitional phase in its security operations.
