Somali Delegation Concludes Inspirational Development Visit to China’s Xinjiang Region

Mogadishu, Somalia – A high-level Somali delegation has returned home after an insightful visit to China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, praising the area’s achievements in stability, coexistence, and development. The visit offered the delegation a close look at how ethnic and religious diversity is not only embraced but also actively supported by regional and national authorities.

One of the most striking takeaways was the state’s active role in safeguarding religious freedoms. The delegation noted the extensive support provided to Islamic institutions, including the construction and restoration of mosques and educational centers. They toured a premier Islamic institute that hosts over a thousand students, highlighting the government’s investment in nurturing religious scholarship.

Cultural preservation was another prominent aspect of the visit. Uyghur traditions and heritage are proudly displayed in purpose-built museums and community spaces, ensuring the survival and celebration of a distinct cultural identity.

On the economic front, the delegation observed tangible efforts to uplift local communities. From farmer training programs to efficient water management using runoff from snowmelt, a broad infrastructure underpins agricultural success. Processing industries have flourished, enabling communities to profit from both domestic and global markets.

Perhaps most relevant to Somalia’s own challenges was Xinjiang’s transformation from a troubled past into a region now marked by security and growth. The delegation recognized that China’s approach to countering extremism—coupled with development strategies—has contributed greatly to peace in the region. They believe Somalia can adapt similar integrated models to address its security issues while promoting inclusive economic progress.

The visit concluded with the Somali representatives expressing optimism that lessons from Xinjiang’s experience could serve as a valuable reference point in Somalia’s ongoing nation-building journey.
