Somali Envoy Honored by Ethiopian Airlines Amid Talks to Boost Bilateral Ties

Pretoria, South Africa – In a move signaling strengthening diplomatic engagement, Somali Ambassador to South Africa, Mohamed Sheikh Issak, met with officials from Ethiopian Airlines in Pretoria this week to discuss avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation between Somalia and Ethiopia, with a particular focus on improving air travel connectivity.

The meeting, which brought together senior representatives of Africa’s largest carrier, centered on fostering stronger people-to-people links, easing travel for Somali nationals, and expanding commercial cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

During the discussions, Ethiopian Airlines’ Country Manager in South Africa presented Ambassador Issak with a Certificate of Honor, recognizing his “dedicated service to Somali citizens.” The symbolic gesture was praised by both parties as a sign of deepening ties and mutual respect between Somalia and Ethiopia.

“This recognition reflects our continued efforts to protect the rights and dignity of Somali travelers and to promote regional cooperation,” Amb. Issak said, reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to enhancing regional integration.

Ethiopian Airlines operates multiple flights connecting Mogadishu with various international destinations via Addis Ababa, playing a vital role in facilitating travel and trade across the Horn of Africa.

The Somali Embassy in South Africa has been active in strengthening Somalia’s diplomatic reach and supporting diaspora communities in the region. This latest engagement with Ethiopian Airlines is expected to result in improved services and potentially new collaboration frameworks benefiting both nations.
