Mogadishu/Damascus – Somalia has formally strengthened its diplomatic presence in the Middle East after Abib Muse Farah, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to the Syrian Arab Republic, presented his credentials on Saturday to President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the People’s Palace in Damascus.
The official ceremony, attended by senior Syrian government officials and diplomats, marked a significant step in reaffirming bilateral relations between Somalia and Syria.
Amb. Farah conveyed greetings and best wishes from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and reiterated Somalia’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Syria in political, economic, and cultural spheres.
In response, President al-Sharaa welcomed the Somali envoy, highlighting the historical ties between the two nations and expressing his government’s readiness to work closely with Somalia on issues of mutual interest, including regional stability and people-to-people exchanges.
The appointment of Amb. Farah comes at a time when Somalia is actively expanding its diplomatic engagements globally, seeking to strengthen political partnerships and explore new avenues for trade and collaboration.
For Somalia, the move also signals a broader push to re-engage with Arab states and reinforce its role within regional organizations such as the Arab League.
Diplomatic analysts view this development as a continuation of Somalia’s recent efforts to revive long-standing relations with countries in the Middle East and the wider Islamic world, which were strained during years of conflict.
The Ambassador’s tenure in Damascus is expected to focus on deepening diplomatic dialogue, fostering cultural connections, and advancing opportunities for mutual support at regional and international forums.
