Somali Families Waiting for Compensation for AFRICOM’s Killing of Loved Ones

Families in Somalia are waiting for the US African Command (AFRICOM) to compensate them for killing their loved ones during recent airstrikes.

Early this week AFRICOM admitted that one of its drone attacks carried out this year against Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia killed an innocent civilian.

The admission comes after several denials by AFRICOM despite reports from human rights watchdogs showing that its drone attacks also killed and injured several civilians.

This week’s admission was the third time in 13 years that AFRICOM had substantiated reports from other sources of killing innocent Somalis.

The military organization works closely with African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops and Somali National Army (SNA) forces to kick Al-Shabaab out of the country.

Amnesty International welcomed AFRICOM’s admission of culpability but called on the organization to do more to avoid similar incidences.

Moreover, Amnesty International also urged AFRICOM to offer compensation to those who have lost their loved ones to the attacks.

Additionally, Amnesty International requests AFRICOM to embrace more accountability and transparency.
