Somalia’s federal government has expressed openness to dialogue with the regional administrations of Puntland and Jubbaland to address ongoing political tensions.
In October 2024, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation, stating, “We will speak with our brothers who hold different views. If they invite us, we will go; if not, they are welcome here.”
Similarly, Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has called for immediate action to prevent further fragmentation of the country, warning that without meaningful political dialogue, Somalia risks breaking apart, with other regions potentially seeking independence, much like Somaliland.
Despite these calls for dialogue, challenges persist.
In November 2024, the federal government deployed additional troops to the El-Wak district in the Gedo region following unsuccessful mediation efforts with Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe.
This move, reportedly lacking prior coordination with the Jubbaland administration, has the potential to escalate existing tensions.
The federal government’s willingness to engage in dialogue with Puntland and Jubbaland reflects a commitment to resolving political divisions and promoting national unity.
However, the situation remains complex, with ongoing challenges that require continued efforts toward reconciliation and cooperation among Somalia’s federal and regional leaders.
