Mogadishu, Somalia – A respected Somali FIFA referee, Omar Artan, has voiced concerns over what he described as an unpleasant experience while traveling with Qatar Airways. Artan said he felt he was not treated with the dignity and respect expected of all passengers, prompting discussions about cultural sensitivity and fair treatment in international air travel.
The incident drew attention from Somali officials, with the Deputy Director of Communications at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Gaashaan, issuing a public statement urging Qatar Airways to review the matter carefully. Gaashaan emphasized that Somalia and Qatar have enjoyed a long-standing relationship grounded in mutual respect, cooperation, and shared values — and that such incidents should not overshadow the positive ties between the two nations.
“Artan indicated that he felt he was not treated with the respect due, which has raised important considerations about dignity and cultural sensitivity,” Gaashaan said.
He added that all service providers, particularly global carriers like Qatar Airways, have a responsibility to uphold the highest standards of fairness and professionalism toward all travelers, regardless of their nationality or background.
Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed hope that the airline will take prompt steps to investigate and address the situation, ensuring similar misunderstandings do not occur in the future.
Artan, known internationally for his integrity and professionalism on the football pitch, has officiated numerous high-profile matches under FIFA and CAF. His experience has resonated with many Somalis who view it as a broader reminder of the importance of respect and equality in international interactions.
As of now, Qatar Airways has not publicly commented on the complaint. However, both Somali officials and members of the sporting community hope that dialogue will lead to a constructive resolution — one that reinforces the shared values of respect and hospitality that define Somalia-Qatar relations.
