Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali Fisheries Development Office has launched a crucial training initiative aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of key maritime institutions, with a focus on improving sea communication, safety, and security within Somalia’s maritime domain.
The multi-day training brought together officials from various national and regional agencies responsible for coastal monitoring, law enforcement, and fisheries management. The program concentrated on equipping participants with modern communication protocols and coordination techniques to effectively address maritime threats, improve emergency response, and strengthen surveillance efforts.
Officials underscored that improving communication at sea is essential not only for the safety of fishermen and coastal communities but also for combating illegal fishing, piracy, and other maritime crimes that continue to undermine Somalia’s blue economy.
“This training plays a vital role in strengthening our ability to monitor, protect, and enforce laws along Somalia’s extensive coastline. By building institutional capacity, we are laying the groundwork for a more secure and economically vibrant maritime sector,” said a representative from the Somali Fisheries Development Office.
The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to develop Somalia’s maritime governance framework and enhance its capacity to sustainably manage marine resources. It also supports the implementation of key components of the national fisheries development strategy, which prioritizes job creation, food security, and environmental sustainability.
With one of the longest coastlines in Africa, Somalia’s maritime domain holds immense potential for economic growth and regional cooperation—provided that security, coordination, and enforcement mechanisms are consistently strengthened.
