Baardheere – Security forces in the Bardhere district of the Gedo region successfully apprehended a prominent Al-Shabab operative on Saturday. A formal press statement from the Federal Government of Somalia identified the detainee as Mohamud Sharif Hussein, the primary ringleader overseeing militant operations within Bardhere and its surrounding settlements.
The government’s report detailed Hussein’s extensive role in destabilizing the region through targeted acts of insecurity and economic sabotage. As the lead operative for local explosives, he confessed to planting landmines along public roads, which resulted in the deaths of several Somali police officers.
Beyond direct combat operations, Hussein served as a vital intelligence and logistics hub for the militant group. He was responsible for monitoring and collecting data on local traders throughout the Gedo region, information which Al-Shabab utilized to systematically confiscate private property and extort the business community. His capture represents a significant disruption to the group’s ability to coordinate logistics and financial interference in the area.
