Somali Forces Blocking MPs from Afiyosini for Elections of Lower House Leadership

Reports from Mogadishu indicate that security forces are blocking legislators from reaching Afiyosini for the election of the new Lower House leadership.

Thus far, roughly 60 Members of Parliament (MPs) have reached the venue for the April 27 elections.

Mahad Mohamed Salad, one of the Lower House lawmakers, showed footage of the security forces blocking his car and preventing him from accessing Afiyosini.

Major General (Rtd) Abdi Hassan Hijar, the Somali Police Force (SPF) Chief, had called for the postponement of the entire process.

Since then, the Somali police chief has been relieved of his duties by the Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Nor.

There are fears that the venue is not secure enough for such a sensitive and important function.
