MOGADISHU — The Somali National Armed Forces (SNA) have officially launched a major new military offensive, dubbed “Operation Lightning,” across strategic areas of the Lower Shabelle region.
The specialized forces, operating with critical ground and logistical backing from Uganda’s African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) troops and other international security partners, are actively working to dismantle significant Khawaarij (Al-Shabaab) strongholds.
Securing Critical Agricultural Zones
According to military officials, the primary objective of “Operation Lightning” is to permanently disrupt the clandestine pathways utilized by the militants for their terrorist activities. By heavily degrading their operational capabilities, the allied forces aim to eliminate any remaining elements plotting asymmetric attacks in the surrounding regions.
Furthermore, the offensive places a high priority on protecting both local civilian populations and the important agricultural and production corridors that are absolutely critical to the nation’s broader food security and economic stability.
Unwavering Resolve During Ramadan
In a formal statement, the Ministry of Defense highly praised the immense courage and dedication of the National Armed Forces. Despite observing the daily fasting requirements of the holy month of Ramadan, the frontline troops remain resolute in their mission to permanently free the country from the grip of terrorism.
Concluding the security briefing, the Ministry confirmed that the broader, overarching military campaign—designated as “Operation Rolling Thunder”—will persist unabated. The federal government vows to sustain this high operational tempo until the Al-Shabaab terrorist group is completely removed as a danger to peace, sustainable development, and ongoing state-building efforts in Somalia.
