Somali Forces Take Control of Sufi Militia Camp

The government’s security forces have taken control of the Sufi camp that had been under militiamen.

During the Saturday fight, twelve people died during the heavy fighting.

On Thursday, Somali National Army started fighting with members of the Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamaa (ASWJ) militia in Dhumasareb.

The fighting intensified on Friday before culminating in ASWJ’s heavy defeat on Saturday.

Abdullahi Ahmed, a commander in Somali National Army, said, “Our forces captured the militia base and the situation has now returned to normalcy.”

Abdullahi also reiterated that ASWJ’s leaders surrendered to the army’s commanders after suffering a heavy defeat.

Witnesses say that members of the group gave up in the evening before the army moved into the camp the following day in the morning.

Sheikh Mohamed Shakir, the leader of the militia group, addressed the press afterward. He said, “We opted to surrender to government’s forces for the sake of our people.”

He emphasized that the safety of the town and its people was now in the hands of the government. In the past 10 years, the Sufi group has controlled all of Galmudug’s main cities.
