Somali Government Denies Role in Suspension of Facebook Accounts of Top Politicians and Journalists

The federal government of Somalia denies reports stating that it is responsible for the suspension of Facebook accounts of several prominent politicians and journalists in the country.

On Wednesday, the Deputy Minister of Information, Abdirahman Al Adale, dismissed allegations suggesting that the federal government was involved in the suspension of several Facebook accounts belonging to prominent politicians and journalists.

He labeled these reports as “fake news” and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding press freedom and freedom of expression.

Over the last few days, a number of leading Somali politicians and journalists have lost access to their Facebook accounts. Primarily, that’s because their accounts stand suspended.
