Somali Government Urged to Drop Trumped up Charges against Journalist Mumin

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has been urged to drop the charges it filed against a local journalist.

Several organizations representing journalists and media owners in Somalia urged the government to drop the “trumped up” charges against journalist Abdalle Ahmed Mumin.

Authorities arrested Mumin last week on Tuesday.

They then presented Mumin in court on Sunday, October 17.

Some of the charges filed against Mumin include bringing the nation/state into disrepute and instigating others not to obey the laws of the land.

He is also accused of non-observance of orders of the authorities.

Now, the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) and Somali Independent Media Houses Association (SIMHA) have urged authorities to drop these charges.

They issued a statement jointly with the Somali Media Association (SOMA) and the Somali Mechanism for Safety of Journalists (SMJS).

The government asked the court to allow it to detain Mumin for a further 45 days to conclude its investigations.
