Somali Govt Appoints Committee to Vet Northeastern State Assembly Members

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, has officially appointed a verification and endorsement committee for the members of the Regional Assembly of the Northeastern State of Somalia.

This initiative marks a critical step in Somalia’s ongoing state-building process, as the federal government works to strengthen inclusive governance and support the institutionalization of emerging federal member states. The appointed committee will be tasked with reviewing the qualifications, legitimacy, and procedural compliance of individuals selected to serve in the regional legislative body.

According to the ministry, the committee’s formation aligns with the constitutional responsibility of the Federal Government to assist in the establishment of federal institutions and to promote equitable political participation across all regions of Somalia.

Hosh emphasized that the vetting process will be impartial and in line with national standards to ensure that only credible, community-endorsed, and law-abiding individuals take up seats in the regional assembly.

“This is a vital step toward ensuring that governance at the regional level is representative, lawful, and capable of contributing effectively to Somalia’s federal framework,” he said.

The move comes amid broader efforts by the federal government to foster stability, reconciliation, and accountability in all federal member states, particularly in newly formed or evolving regions where governance structures are still taking shape.

The Northeastern State, which is in the process of formalizing its political and administrative structures, is viewed as a key player in the federalization process. The verification of assembly members is expected to pave the way for the development of robust governance institutions and encourage civic trust in local leadership.

The committee is expected to begin its work immediately, with support from regional stakeholders, civil society, and international partners observing the process to ensure transparency and fairness.
