Somali Health Workers to be Trained on HIV Testing and Counseling

Somalia’s Ministry of Health has launched a workshop for training health workers in the country on HIV testing and counseling.

Currently, Somalia has low HIV prevalence rates compared to its neighbors such as Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.

However, the country struggles with testing and counseling due to years of civil strife and instability.

It’s healthcare system is not at par with the expected norms of the 21st century.

To address this issue, the health ministry organized a capacity building workshop in Mogadishu. The five-day workshop kicked off on August 23.

Dr. Fawziya Abikar Nur, the Minister of Health, launched the workshop on Monday.

Dr. Abdinasir Sh Mukhtar, the Director General in the health ministry, was also present during the ceremony.

These senior health ministry officials said that the workshop seeks to provide healthcare professionals with training on clinical examination and treatment for HIV patients.
