Somali Journalist Recounts How His Friend Died in the Elite Hotel Terror Attack

Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu, a Somali journalist and the Secretary General of the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ), recounted how he survived the Elite Hotel terror attack.

Elite Hotel came under a deadly attack by Al-Shabaab extremists on Sunday.

During the attack, which started when a car bomb was detonated just outside the hotel gates, more than 16 people lost their lives.

Moalimuu’s friend was one of the victims.

His friend, identified as Abdirizak Abdi, was not fortunate as Moalimuu, who jumped into the sea below.

He says Al-Shabaab extremists almost caught him four times but he managed to escape their attention.

When the going got tough, he jumped into the sea.

Moalimuu was at the hotel to meet his friend and the attack started while they waited for waiters to serve them the coffee they had ordered.

Later, Moalimuu retrieved his friend’s car, which he took to a local garage for repairs. He promised to deliver it to Abdi’s family once it is fully repaired and drivable once again.
