Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Somalia and other IGAD member states will be in the spotlight later this month as Addis Ababa hosts the third edition of the IGAD Media Awards, celebrating journalistic excellence across the Horn of Africa. Scheduled for November 29–30, 2025, the awards will particularly highlight climate change awareness and resilience, honoring media professionals whose reporting drives solutions for communities in the region.
During a joint press briefing on Friday, Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Nebiyat Getachew and IGAD Mission Head Abebaw Bihonegn outlined preparations for the ceremony. The awards aim to recognize journalists whose work not only exposes climate realities but also promotes practical solutions that strengthen community resilience.
Mr. Bihonegn noted that about 400 journalists from across the continent, including Somalia, will compete in eight categories covering television, radio, print, and digital media. A special category will recognize the Best Female Journalist, emphasizing the vital role women play in advancing public awareness. The initiative champions constructive, community-focused journalism that informs, inspires policy, and fosters regional resilience.
Spokesperson Nebiyat Getachew explained that Ethiopia’s role as host reflects the country’s progress in green economic development. He highlighted Ethiopia’s upcoming hosting of the 32nd Session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-32) as evidence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Green Legacy Initiative.
The gathering is expected to draw 2,000 to 2,500 participants, including journalists from Somalia and other IGAD member states, regional policymakers, innovators, and development partners. By spotlighting climate change, the IGAD Media Awards aim to amplify public discourse, strengthen diplomacy, and build stronger connections among communities across the Horn of Africa.
