Nairobi, Kenya – In a major development for Somalia’s political landscape, key opposition figures have jointly announced the formation of the Somalia Future Council, a unified platform aimed at steering the country through its next phase of political transition.
The declaration followed a high-level meeting held on Thursday in Nairobi, bringing together Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe, former Prime Ministers Hassan Ali Khaire and Abdi Farah Shirdon, and Member of Parliament Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, a leading figure in the Somali Salvation Forum.
In their collective statement, the leaders emphasized that the new initiative seeks to consolidate national efforts, promote political inclusivity, and present a coordinated front ahead of the next round of political negotiations. They stressed that unity among political stakeholders is critical to safeguarding stability and advancing democratic governance.
The group further disclosed that a broader summit will be convened in the coming weeks to formalize the opposition coalition’s structure and strategy. While the specifics of the council’s mandate have yet to be outlined, its creation signals a growing momentum among opposition leaders to influence Somalia’s governance trajectory.
Expressing appreciation to Kenya for hosting the talks and its continued support for Somalia’s state-building process, the coalition underscored the need for regional cooperation as the country navigates sensitive reforms, including power-sharing arrangements and electoral frameworks.
The formation of the Somalia Future Council marks one of the most coordinated political moves by opposition actors in recent years, setting the stage for intensified engagement in the nation’s evolving transition process.
