Somali Leaders Urged Not to Abandon Talks on Elections

Somalia leaders have received encouragement from the country’s international partners over the talks currently taking place in the country to find solutions for the electoral impasse.

On February 23, international partners called upon the leaders to “finalize talks on the implementation of the electoral model agreed on September 17, 2020.”

Some of the international partners that spoke include the African Union (AU), European Union (EU), and United Nations (UN).

The partners issued a joint statement on Tuesday urging Somali leaders to start working on the report by the technical committee whose members met in Baidoa from February 15-16.

In their report, the committee claimed that they found solution to the electoral impasse.

The statement by international partners requested leaders to find ways of “maintaining open lines of communication” between them.

They also asked leaders to incorporate the civil society in their discussions.

“Political leaders must now learn to prioritize national interests while working together to deliver credible elections that enjoys the broadest possible support,” their statement read.
