Somali Migrants Stranded in Libya for Years Return Home

More than 73 Somali migrants who have been stranded in Libya for years returned home on December 24.

The migrants were rescued and transported back to Mogadishu through the joint efforts of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Mariam Yassin, Somalia’s Special Envoy for Migration and Children’s Rights, led the rescue efforts that were held under the banner of the European Union (EU)-IOM Joint Initiative.

Other organizations that played a leading role in bringing the migrants back to Somalia include Africa Trust Fund and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

EU in Somalia and Richard Danziger, the IOM Chief of Mission for Somalia, ensured that the migrants made a triumphant return to the East African nation too.
