Nairobi, Kenya — The Finance Minister of Somalia, Bihi Egeh, on Monday chaired a high-level ministerial meeting of the Horn of Africa Initiative (HoAI) at the African Development Bank (AfDB) office in Nairobi. The meeting brought together finance and economic ministers from member countries and development partners to accelerate the region’s digital transformation agenda.
The primary focus was on enhancing regional digital infrastructure, improving broadband connectivity, and expanding access to technology-driven opportunities that can fuel economic growth, create jobs, and improve regional integration.
Egeh emphasized the urgency of investing in digital systems that connect communities across borders. “Digital infrastructure is no longer a luxury; it is the backbone of modern economies,” he said, calling for sustained collaboration among partners and governments.
The meeting also reviewed ongoing HoAI projects and discussed mechanisms to attract private sector investment in ICT infrastructure, fintech, and innovation hubs. Key development partners, including the AfDB, World Bank, EU, and others, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Horn’s digital transition.
With millions of people still lacking access to reliable internet and digital services across the region, the initiative seeks to bridge the digital divide and build a more inclusive and connected Horn of Africa.
The Nairobi session marks a major step toward implementing a coordinated regional strategy that leverages digital technology as a tool for peace, economic resilience, and prosperity.
