Somali Minister Explores Qatar’s Family Court to Bolster Judicial Reform

Doha, Qatar – Somalia’s Minister of Family Affairs and Human Rights, Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, concluded a working visit to the Family Court of Qatar, where she was received with warm hospitality by Dr. Ghanem bin Thamer Al-Mutref Al-Humaidi, a member of Qatar’s Judicial Service Council.

The mission, though brief, carried weighty purpose. Al-Makhzoumi and her delegation toured various court departments, engaging directly with judicial staff to better understand how the Qatari system handles sensitive family-related cases — from marriage disputes and custody arrangements to mediation and enforcement mechanisms.

Unlike typical diplomatic stopovers, the visit was deeply practical. The Somali minister observed active case hearings, witnessing firsthand how trained specialists, streamlined procedures, and technology-driven systems help resolve disputes efficiently while protecting vulnerable parties.

“These exchanges are invaluable. Somalia is rebuilding its justice system, and learning from countries with established frameworks allows us to fast-track reforms rooted in fairness, accessibility, and dignity for all,” Al-Makhzoumi remarked.

The minister expressed hope that Somalia could replicate some of Qatar’s approaches, particularly in counseling services, dispute resolution mechanisms, and court administration.

With Somalia working to strengthen judicial independence and protect family rights — especially for women and children — the visit marked a step toward deeper cooperation between the two nations in legal development.

Both sides signaled readiness to expand collaboration through training exchanges and institutional partnerships, setting the stage for a more resilient and people-centered judicial system back home.
