Somali Minister Meets President Erdogan in Ankara

Ankara, Türkiye — Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, was officially received by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara during a working visit aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

In the high-level meeting, Nur extended the Somali government’s gratitude to President Erdogan for Turkey’s consistent and multifaceted support to Somalia. He praised Ankara’s contributions to Somalia’s infrastructure, humanitarian assistance, education, and security sectors, calling the Turkish-Somali partnership “a model of modern development cooperation.”

“Turkey’s unwavering solidarity with Somalia, especially in the reconstruction of our port infrastructure and maritime institutions, is greatly appreciated by our people and government,” Nur stated during the meeting.

President Erdogan reaffirmed his country’s commitment to further strengthening relations with Somalia, highlighting strategic projects such as the Turkish-built Mogadishu Port expansion, the construction of modern maritime facilities, and ongoing vocational training programs for Somali seafarers and coast guard personnel.

The visit comes amid growing Turkish engagement in the Horn of Africa and follows several high-level exchanges between the two countries. Somalia remains one of Turkey’s most important partners in Africa, with cooperation spanning economic development, defense, and political consultation.

The minister’s trip also includes meetings with Turkish maritime officials and private sector stakeholders, as Somalia continues to pursue its Blue Economy agenda and revive its shipping industry.

The Somali government described the meeting as a significant step in consolidating the strategic partnership between the two nations, particularly in maritime development and regional connectivity.
