Somali Movie Makes Historic Debut in China-Africa Film Week

Beijing — The China-Africa Film Week concluded over the past weekend with a historic milestone for Somali cinema.

For the first time, a Somali-language film was officially screened in Chinese theaters, putting the spotlight on Somalia’s rich storytelling tradition and opening a new chapter for cultural exchange between the two countries.

The acclaimed Somali drama, The Gravedigger’s Wife, captivated Chinese audiences under this year’s event theme, “Bridging Continents, Connected by Light and Emotion.”

Directed by Khadar Ayderus Ahmed, the film has already garnered international praise, winning top honors at the FESPACO Pan-African Film and Television Festival.

Organizers of the Film Week emphasized that the Somali film’s inclusion reflects a commitment to celebrating diverse African voices and strengthening people-to-people connections.

Throughout the week, Chinese and African filmmakers attended screenings, panel discussions, and networking sessions to explore future collaborations.

The Somali ambassador to China described the screening as “a historic breakthrough,” saying that it will help promote Somali culture globally. Chinese attendees praised the film for its powerful message and emotional depth.

The success of The Gravedigger’s Wife at the China-Africa Film Week demonstrates the growing influence of Somali cinema and signals a promising future for cultural partnerships between Africa and China.
