Mogadishu, Somalia — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Wednesday held talks with China’s Ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu, in a meeting that underscored the growing importance of bilateral relations between the two nations.
According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, Barre expressed gratitude to Beijing for its continued support in multiple spheres, including security cooperation, economic development, and humanitarian assistance. He emphasized that Somalia views China as a vital partner in its nation-building and stabilization agenda.
Amb. Wang, for his part, reaffirmed China’s commitment to Somalia’s development journey, stressing the importance of expanding collaboration in priority sectors such as infrastructure, trade, investment, and capacity building. He noted that stronger bilateral ties would serve not only the two countries but also broader regional stability and growth.
The meeting comes at a time when Mogadishu is intensifying its diplomatic outreach to international partners to accelerate reconstruction and economic recovery. China has historically supported Somalia through infrastructure projects, scholarships, health initiatives, and humanitarian relief, and the latest engagement signals continuity and potential expansion of that role.
Officials say both sides agreed to explore new avenues of cooperation to consolidate progress in governance, economic resilience, and security stabilization, while also seeking to strengthen people-to-people ties.
This latest dialogue reinforces Somalia’s strategic positioning in the Horn of Africa, where global powers are increasingly active, and reflects Beijing’s sustained interest in engaging with African states on shared priorities.
