Yinchuan, China – Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Thursday delivered a landmark speech at the 7th China-Arab States Expo, outlining his government’s ambitious roadmap for peace, security, and economic transformation while positioning Somalia as a pivotal hub linking Africa, the Arab world, and Asia.
Addressing international delegates in Yinchuan, the Prime Minister said Somalia had emerged from decades of conflict with renewed determination to harness its strategic location, vast natural resources, and young population to drive growth and stability. “Somalia stands at the crossroads of continents and trade routes. With peace and reforms, we are opening a new chapter of opportunity,” he declared.
Barre highlighted priority investment sectors including energy, agriculture, fisheries, infrastructure, and technology, urging Chinese and Arab partners to take advantage of Somalia’s untapped markets. He emphasized that fisheries remain one of the world’s richest yet underutilized, while renewable energy—particularly solar and wind—offers immense potential for sustainable development.
“Somalia’s coastline, fertile land, and dynamic workforce present unmatched opportunities for investors seeking long-term growth,” the Prime Minister noted, adding that public-private partnerships will be central to accelerating the country’s transformation.
The Somali leader also underscored growing economic ties with Beijing, pointing out that bilateral trade between Somalia and China had surged by 20 percent in the past year. He attributed this to expanded cooperation in goods, services, and infrastructure, describing the growth as a testament to the enduring six-decade relationship between the two nations.
Security and reform were at the core of Barre’s message. He assured participants that his government remains committed to consolidating peace, fighting terrorism, and advancing governance reforms to strengthen the rule of law and investor confidence. “A peaceful Somalia is not only good for our people, it is vital for the stability of the Horn of Africa and for international trade,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s address was received as a strong signal of Somalia’s determination to integrate into the global economy and reaffirm its role as a bridge between regions. With the expo bringing together business leaders, policymakers, and investors from across Asia and the Arab world, observers noted that Somalia’s proactive engagement marks a significant step toward reshaping its global economic and diplomatic partnerships.
