Somali Police Chief Leads Push to Bolster Border Security

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Commissioner of Somali Police Force (SPF), General Asad Osman Abdullahi, on Thursday chaired a high-level security meeting aimed at tightening the country’s border management systems and improving inter-agency cooperation to counter cross-border threats.

The meeting, held in Mogadishu, brought together key national and international partners, including Mustaf Dhuhulow, Director of the Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA); the Director General of Finland’s Immigration Service; senior officials from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID); INTERPOL; and the Somali Coast Guard.

At the center of the discussions was a unified strategy to strengthen intelligence sharing, border surveillance, and joint operations along Somalia’s porous frontiers. The initiative underscores the government’s growing determination to enhance national security through collaboration, not only among domestic institutions but also with international allies.

Gen. Osman emphasized that effective border security is essential to Somalia’s fight against terrorism, smuggling, and irregular migration.

“Our borders are the first line of defense for our nation’s safety. Strengthening coordination across agencies and with our partners ensures that Somalia can better detect and prevent transnational crimes,” he said.

Officials from INTERPOL and the Finnish Immigration Service reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Somalia in building a modern, data-driven border management system capable of tracking movements, verifying identities, and improving screening processes.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to develop an integrated operational framework that would allow Somali security agencies and their partners to share intelligence swiftly and conduct coordinated field operations.

For a country recovering from decades of instability, the push to secure borders marks another step toward stability, sovereignty, and global cooperation — a signal that Somalia is intent on protecting both its citizens and its future.
