Somali Police Force Celebrates 82nd Anniversary with Calls for Enhanced Security and Public Cooperation

The Somali Police Force (SPF) is commemorating a significant moment in its history today as it marks the 82nd anniversary of its founding. Celebrated annually on December 20, this event stands as a national representation of Somalia’s persistent institutions and pays tribute to the most established component of the nation’s security system.
Brigadier General Asad Osman Abdullahi, head of the Somali Police Force, guided the national observance by offering congratulations to all members of the force across all ranks. In an address to officers, non-commissioned personnel, the Commissioner characterized this anniversary as a pivotal moment for the institution. He encouraged security personnel to regard this achievement as inspiration to intensify their commitment to executing the national responsibilities placed upon them.
The Somali Police Force occupies a distinctive position in the nation’s historical narrative, having been founded in 1943, well before Somalia officially became a republic. Serving as the most senior branch of the security services, frequently identified as the “mother of all forces,” the police played a crucial role in establishing the foundations of the Somali state. The creation of this force was deemed essential for developing governmental structures capable of international engagement on equal terms with other nations.
Throughout its existence, the SPF has remained integral to protecting both the populace and the nation. The force contributed significantly to the independence movement and exhibited exceptional courage during the major conflicts of 1964 and 1977 while working to free occupied Somali lands.
The functions of the Somali Police are explicitly outlined in the national constitution, encompassing challenging duties that benefit both the nation and the global community. These obligations include addressing local and cross-border criminal activities, countering terrorism, protecting national sovereignty, maintaining internal security, and preserving legal order.
As the principal body overseeing civilian law enforcement, the Somali Police Force maintains active participation and authentic operational ties with Interpol, integrating Somalia’s security framework into the worldwide policing network.
Although the dissolution of the central government in 1991 substantially affected the institution, considerable progress has been achieved since the beginning of the 2000s to restructure and rejuvenate the force. The consolidation of different command units and the enlistment of emerging generations of young people have been pivotal in reestablishing legal order and stability.

To maintain this advancement, the organization requires ongoing modernization efforts, including sophisticated training to improve professional capabilities and the allocation of essential resources to effectively safeguard the nation’s future. The leadership highlighted that police personnel are the “public’s partners,” urging citizens to collaborate closely with security officials to preserve stability and cultivate an orderly system.
Observances are taking place nationwide, with various divisions demonstrating their preparedness.
