Somali Police Rewarded for Role in Securing Independence Week Celebrations

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali Police Force (SPF) has received national recognition for its instrumental role in ensuring peace and security during the country’s 65th Independence Week celebrations, which culminated on July 1st.

In a ceremony held at the General Kahiye Police Academy in Mogadishu, senior government officials and security leaders paid tribute to officers who demonstrated exceptional commitment and discipline during the nationwide events.

Minister of Internal Security Mohamed Sheikh Ali Doodishe and Police Commissioner Major General Sulub Ahmed Firin led the ceremony, praising the force for facilitating safe public gatherings, parades, and cultural festivals held across Mogadishu and other major towns.

The celebrations marked the unification of the former British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland in 1960, a historic milestone in Somalia’s statehood.

“This year’s Independence Week was peaceful, patriotic, and well-organized, and this would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our brave men and women in uniform. The Somali Police Force once again proved its readiness and professionalism in safeguarding our people and our democratic traditions,” said Doodishe.

Officers were decorated with certificates of merit, medals of honor, and commendation letters for their services. Units from the Rapid Response Team, Special Operations Command, and Traffic Division were singled out for their coordination and swift actions in maintaining law and order during high-profile events attended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, and foreign dignitaries.

Police Commissioner Firin reaffirmed the SPF’s commitment to public service and emphasized the importance of ongoing reforms to modernize the police.

“The people of Somalia deserve a capable, trusted, and community-oriented police force. We are proud of our achievements, but we are also aware of the work that remains,” the police chief said.

Independence Week was observed under tight security amid threats from extremist groups. Despite minor incidents, no major disruptions were reported, and citizens participated in the festivities in record numbers, with patriotic displays, cultural performances, and community dialogues organized across the country.

Security analysts and civil society leaders praised the SPF’s efforts and called for continued investment in police training, logistics, and morale.

The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence in honor of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, followed by a parade and traditional music performed by the Police Band.
