Somali President and U.S. Advisor Discuss Deeper Cooperation Amid Somalia’s Political Uncertainty

Mogadishu, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a phone conversation with U.S. Senior Advisor for Africa, Massad Boulos, to discuss strengthening cooperation and advancing shared goals for peace, stability, and governance in Somalia.

According to a statement from Villa Somalia, the two leaders exchanged views on the U.S. government’s continued support for Somalia’s institution-building, counterterrorism operations, and efforts to consolidate democratic governance. The discussion came at a sensitive moment for the Horn of Africa nation, as debates intensify over the format of the 2026 national elections and the roadmap toward universal suffrage.

President Mohamud expressed his appreciation for Washington’s “longstanding partnership” and praised U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent diplomatic initiatives, describing them as constructive steps that contribute to global peace and regional stability.

Boulos reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to Somalia’s progress, emphasizing that stability in Somalia remains a key pillar of U.S. engagement in the region. He also commended Mogadishu’s ongoing reforms in governance, security, and economic recovery.

The call underscored a renewed spirit of collaboration between Mogadishu and Washington at a time when Somalia continues to navigate political reform, counterinsurgency operations against al-Shabaab, and the challenge of ensuring inclusive representation in its next electoral cycle.

For President Mohamud, the conversation reflected not just diplomatic courtesy but also a signal of Somalia’s determination to remain a dependable partner in regional stability efforts — and a nation steadily rebuilding its future through dialogue and shared vision.
