Somali President Arrives in Kampala for talks with President Museveni

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Kampala on Saturday for high-level discussions with his Ugandan counterpart, President Yoweri Museveni.

The meeting between President Mohamud and Ugandan President Museveni at the State House in Kampala marked significant progress in strengthening cooperation between the two nations.

They agreed on the need to enhanced cooperation between their respective nations. Both countries committed to bolstering collaboration in security, trade, and development. Uganda reiterated its support for Somalia’s security efforts.

Moreover, Uganda agreed to continue supporting Somali security forces. The leaders affirmed their backing for Somali forces and the newly approved African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which will replace the current AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) from December 31, 2024.

The Presidents discussed ways of increasing bilateral trade between Somalia and Uganda too. They agreed to increase bilateral trade and encourage further investments between Somalia and Uganda.

Their discussions also touched on recognition of Somalia’s achievement. Somalia’s recent membership in the East African Community (EAC) and its upcoming role on the United Nations Security Council for 2025-2026 were acknowledged as milestones that position the country as an important player in regional and global affairs.

The recent decision by the United Nations to lift the arms embargo imposed on Somalia years ago featured prominently in the discussions too. The leaders emphasized the lifting of the arms embargo on Somalia as a crucial development that will allow Somalia to better handle its security responsibilities.

This meeting signifies stronger ties between Somalia and Uganda, contributing to both nations’ efforts to address regional security and economic challenges.
