President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia has disbanded the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC).
The President issued a presidential decree on November 21 calling for the disbandment of the electoral body.
In the decree, President Mohamud stated that the establishment of the NIEC never adhered to any constitutional requirement.
He has called upon the Council of Cabinet to work on modalities for forming a new electoral body in accordance with Somalia’s constitution and laws.
