President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia was conspicuously absent as Kenya unveiled its official candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship.
Kenya’s President William Ruto unveiled Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga as its candidate for the Chairmanship of AUC, whose elections take place in February 2025.
The unveiling took place in Nairobi on Tuesday, August 27.
Several leaders from the region were invited and attended the ceremony.
These included President Yoweri Museveni and President Samia Suluhu of Uganda and Tanzania respectively.
South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir was also present.
However, it’s not clear why the Somali President failed to show up at the event.
A few weeks ago, Somalia’s candidate for the position Fawzia Yusuf Adam withdrew and threw her weight behind Odinga’s candidature.
