Somali President Heads to New York for UN General Assembly

Mogadishu, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud departed Mogadishu on Saturday bound for New York, where he will join world leaders at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The annual gathering, which convenes heads of state and government from across the globe, offers Somalia a critical platform to highlight national priorities, share progress on state-building, and strengthen international partnerships.

Officials in Villa Somalia said President Mohamud will use his address to underscore Somalia’s advances in peacebuilding, economic reform, and democratic governance, while also appealing for stronger global cooperation in combating terrorism and responding to climate shocks that continue to weigh heavily on Somali communities.

The President’s agenda in New York is expected to include bilateral and multilateral meetings with leaders, UN agencies, and development partners. According to diplomatic sources, discussions will likely focus on security sector reform, debt relief progress under the International Monetary Fund and World Bank programs, and Somalia’s campaign for increased humanitarian support amid recurrent droughts and floods.

President Mohamud’s delegation includes senior ministers and advisers tasked with advancing Somalia’s foreign policy priorities during the week-long summit. His participation comes at a time when Somalia is pushing to consolidate stability, strengthen its economy, and reinforce ties with the international community.

The 80th UNGA session is scheduled to run through the coming week, with world leaders expected to deliberate on global peace, sustainable development, and collective action to address mounting international crises.
