Somali President Holds Extensive Talks with Ugandan Counterpart in Kampala

On Saturday, April 5, 2025, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia met with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda at State Lodge, Nakasero, in Kampala.

During their meeting, the two leaders exchanged views on regional and bilateral issues of mutual interest, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace, security, and stability in the Horn of Africa region.

They commended the efforts and sacrifices made by the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and Somali Security Forces in stabilizing Somalia and combating Al-Shabaab.

Furthermore, they welcomed the establishment of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) as a successor to ATMIS and called for predictable and sustainable funding for its success.

Additionally, President Mohamud expressed gratitude to President Museveni for Uganda’s support in Somalia’s fight against terrorism since 2007.

The leaders also discussed enhancing bilateral relations, including signing agreements on education, sports, and immigration management, and convening the second session of the Joint Permanent Commission and an Investment and Business Summit.

President Museveni congratulated Somalia on becoming a member of the East African Community and its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2025-2026.

They both reiterated their commitment to deepening regional integration through organizations such as the East African Community, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the AU.
