Somali President in Talks with UN Secretary-General in Ethiopia

On Sunday, during the 38th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the summit, and the two leaders discussed several critical issues.

They reviewed advancements in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to combat international terrorism, particularly the role of the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and its transition to the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) then subsequently AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

They emphasized the UN’s crucial support in areas of security, stabilization, and development, highlighting the importance of international collaboration for Somalia’s progress.

The leaders exchanged views on pressing regional issues, underscoring the need for collective efforts to address peace and security challenges in the Horn of Africa and beyond.

President Mohamud reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to working closely with the UN and expressed gratitude for the Secretary-General’s continued support in the country’s journey toward stability and development.

This meeting underscores the strong partnership between Somalia and the UN in addressing both national and regional challenges.
